Gyro in Carytown
STYLE Weekly by Deveron Timberlake                                                                                                 March 10, 2010

“The divided plastic plate with souvlakia, green beans in tomatoes, rice pilaf, pita and tzatziki is familiar. It’s a taste of the Greek Festival, but it’s now a daily thing in Carytown. Basilis Greek Restaurant has opened in the former Carytown Seafood, the culmination of a lengthy build-out process in which Basilis Tsimbos learned new levels of patience.

His passion paid off. Word spread quickly that his spanakopita, salads and grilled panini — including braised beef and Greek meatballs — are tasty and affordable. Most combo plates are $7-$8; only the lamb souvlakia combo hovers near $10. The cafe is set up fast-food style with seats at counters and tables, a soda fountain at the back and desserts in a case. First-timers might miss the baklava, kataifi, galaktobouriko, finiki, kourambies, koulourakia and rice pudding that are stocked just past the checkout line. A second look at the sweets almost guarantees a taste.”

“A new Greek place opened in Carytown named Basili's. My girlfriend and I went there last night, and we were not disappointed. Everyone there was very friendly, and the food was good. The place just opened, so they're still working out a few kinks. But it was exactly what we wanted: plenty of food at a reasonable price.

We were welcomed in and given generous amount of lamb in our gyros. I liked the French Fries, too. We both ate for about $15. Why a Greek place hasn't opened in Carytown before now makes no sense to me.

I wish Basili's well. Now I just need to work on pronouncing it.”

“Lovers of Greek food have an all new restaurant to satisfy their Mediterranean tastes as Basili's of Carytown now welcomes greekophile diners to enjoy their menu of fresh Greek dishes. The restaurant at 3107 W Cary St opened at lunchtime today to offer both carry out and dine in lunch orders.

"All of our ingredients are fresh and everything is homemade," a confident Basili's employee assured me. The new restaurant features a sparkling stainless steel serving line with piping hot dishes and a large baked goods rack filled with everyone's favorite Greek desserts.

Service was very fast during my lunchtime visit and the staff was both friendly and eager to explain the variety of dishes offered. Prices at the restaurant were very reasonable both for the quality and speed with which the food was prepared and delivered. I enjoyed a gyro loaded with well cooked meat and fresh herbs for around $5.

Boulevardizen.com encourages all readers to visit Basili's Greek Restaurant of Carytown and spread the word about our area's latest treat.

FULL DISCLOSURE: The friendly staff provided a sample of desserts at no charge and while these extra treats were very delicious they did not influence my positive review of the establishment.”
